Vaccination Effect on Pharyngeal Carrier Rate of Neisseria meningitidis and Its Serogroups in Korean Army Recruits

Abstract
To determine the efficacy of Neisseria meningitidis vaccine(Menomune(r), Connaught Laboratories, INC, Swiftwater, PA., USA) in the Nonsan army training center, we vaccinated 160 trainees. The pharyngeal culture and s
erogrouping were done on the
first
day at the camp and 3 weeks and 6 weeks into training.
On the contray to the control group, the vaccinated group didn't show rising tendency of carrier rate. The carrier rate of vaccinated group were 16.9% on the first day, 18.1% after 3 weeks and 16.3% after 6 weeks, and those of the control group
were
8.1%, 18.1% and 33.1% respectively.
Serogroups of 177 strains isolated from carriers of both groups were as follows in descending order. W135(24.3%), 29E(20.3%), Y(5.1%), A(4.5%), B(1.7%), Z(1.7%), X(1.7%), C(1.1%), and D(1.1%) and 33.4% and the isolates were nongroupable, Control
group
showed increased proportion of serogroup A and C.
Between May, 1991 and January, 1992, there was 1 case of suspected meningococcal infection in the Nonsan army training center. Blood culture and Gram staining were negative inspite of typical clinical features. We should be able to identify and
serogroup all meningococcal infections to determine which serogroup is reponsible for disease process in Korea and ultimately to choose effective protective mechanism, be it A/C, A/C/W135/Y vaccination, chemoprophylaxis or combination of above.
